IDEAL IMPLANT® Structured Breast Implants
Dr. Barone proudly offers IDEAL IMPLANT® Structured Breast implants at her practice, an advanced implant option that combines the desirable qualities of both traditional saline and silicone gel. IDEAL IMPLANT® is a multi-layered and structured implant that contains saline, but has been designed to feel natural, mimicking the feel of silicone gel implants. This quality is made possible by the internal structure of the implant that consists of nested shells and two separate chambers filled with saline solution. This design creates a cushioned feel comparable to a silicone gel and lowers the risk of implant failure by reducing wrinkling and folding, the main causes of implant rupture and deflation.
These unique features can ensure there is a very low risk of silent rupture, and patients only need to look in the mirror to know that their implants are intact. Unlike silicone gel implants, patients who receive IDEAL IMPLANT® Structured Breast implants have the peace of mind knowing that even in a case of rupture, the saline solution filling their implant can be harmlessly absorbed by the body. A breast implant size that might look desirable before the operation may not complement a patient’s overall appearance, leading to dissatisfactory results. The wrong implant size is the biggest cause of breast revision surgery, leading to further costs and inconvenience for the patient.
To counter these problems, Dr. Barone offers adjustable breast implants at her practice. Adjustable implants are fitted with a small injection port that is attached to the implant through a small tube, allowing Dr. Barone to add or withdraw saline post-operatively. Patients have the final say over the implant size, and your breast augmentation results can be customized according to your aesthetic goals.
Gummy bear breast implants consist of a silicone shell filled with a dense silicone gel, giving them a consistency much like gummy bear candy. Gummy bear implants come in a variety of pre-formed shapes. These implants are approved for women 22 years of age and older.
Gummy bear implants offer unique benefits:
- They retain their shape the best of all implant types.
- These implants offer more shape choices than silicone or saline implants.
- They have little to no chance of rippling or rupturing.
Some disadvantages of gummy bear implants include:
- Because the shape does not conform, a rotated implant will greatly distort the shape of the breast, and requires correction.
- Gummy bear implants require larger incisions and cannot be placed through the armpit or belly button.
- Gummy bear implants may feel too hard or unnatural compared to saline or silicone implants.
Saline vs Silicone
Like silicone, saline-filled breast implants have a silicone outer shell. This shell is filled with saline (salt water solution) before or after it is placed within the breast. These implants are approved for women 18 years of age and older.
Saline implants offer several benefits:
- If they rupture, saline is naturally absorbed by the body.
- Rupture is easy to detect as implants almost immediately deflate.
- These implants can be placed through a smaller incision than silicone implants, and may even be inserted through the armpit or belly button for better hidden scars.
- Saline implants are partially or fully filled within the breast, so Dr. Barone can adjust the volume of each breast for more exact symmetry.
Meanwhile, some women feel that saline implants do not look or feel as natural as silicone implants.
Silicone breast implants consist of a silicone shell filled with silicone gel. These implants are pre-filled in a wide variety of sizes. Silicone implants are approved for breast augmentation in women 22 years of age and older. Many women find silicone implants feel more natural than saline implants, and because they are filled with gel, they also produce a more natural-looking appearance.
However, because they are pre-filled, silicone implants require a larger incision. This also means that silicone implants cannot be adjusted in volume once they have been inserted. Silicone implants cannot be placed using as many insertion techniques as saline implants because they cannot be folded. Should a silicone implant rupture, patients may not immediately notice, so silicone may enter the natural breast tissue.
TUBA, also known as belly button breast augmentation, is offered to our San Antonio and Austin-area patients who are considering breast implants to add volume and fullness to their bustline. One of the chief advantages to this state-of-the-art procedure is there is only one small (1.5 cm) incision made for implant placement hidden within the belly button and the resulting scar is virtually undetectable. By placing the implants through the navel, only one incision is necessary, and it is a fraction of the length required for more invasive breast enlargement procedures. In addition, TUBA involves less risk than other breast augmentation options. Since no incisions are made on the breasts themselves, there is less of a possibility of damage to the breasts’ nerves. Plus, the procedure is shorter than traditional breast augmentation methods, which reduces the risk of complications with anesthesia. Typically, this procedure takes less than 30 minutes.
