Breast reduction at our San Antonio center can be achieved and effectively with Dr. Constance Barone. Many women suffer from pain, discomfort, and embarrassment as a result of having overly large breasts. At our facility serving the South Texas area, including San Antonio and Austin, breast reduction surgery can not only alleviate some of negative effects of an excessively large bust, it can provide a new contour and proportion to your body frame.
Reduction mammoplasty, or breast reduction, is a surgical procedure designed to remove fat, skin, and glandular tissue from the breasts. A breast reduction can also reduce the size of the areola (the dark-pigmented area around the nipple). Patients considering breast reduction often suffer from a variety of conditions brought on by overly large breasts, including:
Overly large breasts can also make it difficult to wear certain clothing, and make a woman feel self-conscious or embarrassed about her appearance. At our breast reduction facility in San Antonio, Dr. Constance Barone is committed to helping you achieve smaller, re-contoured breasts that are better proportioned to your body frame. Breast reduction can be combined with other procedures, such as abdominoplasty or liposuction, to provide an even more complete body makeover.
Candidates for breast reduction are typically those patients who seek physical relief from the effects of overly large breasts. Women who intend to breastfeed are not good candidates for the procedure. Breast reduction is only recommended for patients whose breasts have fully developed, although there can be exceptions made for patients who are experiencing serious physical discomfort. Patients should have realistic expectations about the results of breast reduction surgery, and discuss their goals in detail with Dr. Barone at the initial consultation.
Please contact our Austin-area plastic surgery center for more information on candidacy for the procedure.
Dr. Constance Barone will discuss the entire breast reduction procedure with you during your initial consultation. She encourages you to be frank and honest in your expectations, and she will be equally as honest in how the procedure may or may not benefit you. At this first meeting, Dr. Barone will measure your breasts and possibly photograph them for reference during surgery. This consultation is the perfect time to ask questions and relay concerns to Dr. Barone, and she will address all of these issues with you. Dr. Barone will also use this time to discuss cost and financing aspects of the procedure. Since breast reduction surgery can often be a medical necessity, it may be covered by insurance.
Before surgery, you may need to undergo a mammogram. You will also be given guidelines on diet and which medications and vitamins to take or avoid prior to the breast reduction procedure. Dr. Barone also advises you to arrange for someone to take you home after the surgery, and to help you with your needs for a few days, if necessary.
Breast reduction can be performed here at our San Antonio facility or at one of our affiliated hospitals on an out- or in-patient basis. The procedure is nearly always performed under general anesthesia. Although breast reduction surgical techniques vary, Dr. Barone will likely utilize the traditional method of creating an anchor-shaped incision that circles the areola and extends downward to the natural crease of the breast. Fat, skin, and glandular tissue will be removed, and the nipple and areola re-positioned. Depending on the extent of the procedure, breast reduction usually takes about three to four hours to complete. If only fat needs to be removed to achieve a significant breast reduction, liposuction alone may be sufficient instead of the more invasive breast surgery.
Our San Antonio and Austin-area breast reduction patients should expect some pain and discomfort after the procedure, but this can be alleviated with medication. Swelling may also be present for several weeks, which may cause some loss of feeling in the nipples and breast skin. This is generally temporary; however, some patients have reported permanent sensation loss. Patients can typically resume normal daily routines after about two weeks; however, strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for at least three to four weeks.
It's important for patients to know that there is extensive and permanent scarring from the procedure; however, Dr. Barone will make residual scars as inconspicuous as possible, and they will fade over time.
There are always risks associated with any type of surgery, and breast reduction surgery is no different. Some of the risks involved with breast reduction include:
Although there are a number of risks involved with the procedure, Dr. Constance Barone is a skilled and experienced plastic surgeon who is known the world over for her successful and pioneering work in the field of breast surgery.
