Austin and San Antonio-Area Facelift and Facial Contouring Options

The signs of age can often be no more prevalent than in the face, and a number of cosmetic treatments can help turn back the hands of time. At our plastic surgery center serving the San Antonio and Austin areas, facelift surgery, mid-facelift, brow lift, and many other facial contouring procedures are performed by our plastic surgeon to eliminate wrinkles and fine lines and provide significant rejuvenation to the face.

Facelift

Facelift, or rhytidectomy, can improve visible signs of aging on the face by tightening facial muscles, removing excess fat, and redraping the skin of the face and neck. Facelift is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures because it effectively addresses several problems that can affect the face as we age, among them:

A facelift can give the entire face a refreshed, more youthful appearance by tightening the skin and reducing the appearance of wrinkles and other effects of the natural aging process. And, when combined with other procedures such as eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, or brow lift, you can achieve a total facial makeover that can make you look and feel years younger.

Facelift Candidates

Most patients who undergo facelift surgery are between the ages of 40 and 60; however, people in their 70s and 80s have also had successful results with the procedure. The best candidates are those that have noticeable sagging and visible signs of aging on their face. Candidates must also have reasonably good skin elasticity and strong bone structure. Patients considering facelift should also be in good overall health, as the procedure will require significant healing and recovery time. Good candidates should also have realistic expectations for results, and understand that facelift is a cosmetic enhancement procedure; it will not restore the health and vitality of youth. Dr. Constance Barone will discuss all aspects of the procedure with you, in detail, during your initial consultation at our Austin and San Antonio-area facelift surgery practice.

Facelift Procedure

Planning

During your initial facelift consultation, Dr. Constance Barone will conduct an evaluation of your face, paying particular attention to your skin and the underlying bone structure. She will also ask if you have any medical conditions such as uncontrolled high blood pressure, problems with blood clotting, or a tendency to scar easily. Dr. Barone encourages patients to be honest and forthright about whether they smoke and/or are taking any medications or drugs, including aspirin. It is important that the initial consult is a frank discussion between you and Dr. Barone in order to avoid problems or complications with the surgery down the road. Dr. Barone will also take this opportunity to be equally honest with you about all aspects of the procedure, including risks and possible alternatives, plastic surgery costs and financing information, and how best to meet your goals.

Preparation

Dr. Barone will provide you with guidelines on what to eat and drink before the surgery, as well as which medications or vitamins supplements to take and which to avoid. Our San Antonio facelift surgeon will also advise you to arrange for someone to drive you home, and possibly stay with you for a day or two after the surgery.

If you have very short hair, it also may benefit you to grow it out before surgery, as that can hide the scars while they heal.

The Facelift Surgery

Facelift can be performed as an outpatient or inpatient procedure at our new surgery center or in one of our affiliated hospitals in the San Antonio area. The patient is typically given local anesthesia combined with a sedative, although general anesthesia may also be used. Facelift is a very individualized procedure, and Dr. Barone will conform her surgical approach to your needs. Generally, incisions will be made above the hairline at the temples, extend to the front of the ear or inside the front-ear cartilage, and continue behind the earlobe. Skin and fat will be separated from the underlying muscle. Dr. Barone will then tighten the muscles, lift the skin, and remove any excess skin. The incisions are closed, securing the layers of tissue. Depending on the extent of the procedure, facelift typically takes around two hours to complete.

Facelift Recovery

There will be some bruising and swelling after facelift, which will fade as the face heals. The head will likely be bandaged after the procedure, and will need to be kept elevated for the first few days of recovery. Pain and discomfort can be controlled with medication. Patients should avoid strenuous activities for about two weeks. Most patients who have undergone facelift can resume normal, daily activities after about 10 days. Scars will be made as discreet as possible, and can generally be hidden by the hair or in the natural creases of the ears and face. They also tend to fade significantly with time. Patients should expect the full results of facelift to be apparent after the first few weeks following the surgery.

Facelift Risks

Although facelift is performed in a safe environment with our experienced plastic surgeon, there is a certain level of risk associated with the procedure. Risks of facelift include:

The best way of minimizing the risk of complications from facelift surgery is to strictly adhere to Dr. Barone's advice and recommendations before and after the procedure. It should also be noted that facelift is considered one of the safest cosmetic surgery options. Dr. Constance Barone will discuss all risks and benefits of facelift with you at your initial consultation.

Facelift Results

It may not stop the clock, but the effects of facelift can last for years. Both men and women have emerged with revitalized and rejuvenated appearances thanks to this very common procedure. As facelift is a major surgical procedure, it yields some of the most significant results for reducing, even eliminating, signs of age and sun damage that occur with the passing of time.

Mid-Facelift

Mid-facelift is a less invasive surgical procedure designed to restore a youthful, smooth look to the lower eyelids and cheeks. Targeting signs of aging and sun damage that occur around the eyes, nose, and corners of the mouth, mid-facelift is a good alternative to traditional facelift for patients whose neck and chin areas do not require lifting. Mid-facelift can be performed endoscopically, a precise, minimally invasive surgical technique that requires less recovery time and results in almost invisible scarring. A small camera is inserted through a tiny incision made in the muscle tissue of the face so that Dr. Constance Barone can view the procedure on a video monitor. Small surgical instruments are then used to eliminate excess fat and reshape facial muscles and tissue, thereby reducing sagging or drooping of the facial skin. The middle of the face is lifted and tightened, producing a smoother upper facial area.

At your initial consultation, Dr. Barone will discuss with you different techniques of performing mid-facelift, and together, you will decide which one may best suit your needs.

Mini-Facelift

Quickness of the procedure and a short recovery period are hallmarks of this effective facial rejuvenation option. Designed to reduce minor sagging around the jaw line, cheeks, and neck, the mini-facelift uses smaller incisions and focuses on specific areas of the face, such as the folds of the nose and the neck. The mini-facelift can also be performed endoscopically, using a special camera and small medical instruments to tighten facial muscles and remove excess fat. This procedure is most effective for people who are just beginning to show signs of facial aging but do not wish to undergo more invasive surgery. It also requires minimal anesthesia, and is sometimes referred to as the "weekend" facelift because of its marginal recovery time.

Forehead (Brow) Lift

Signs of aging and exhaustion in the forehead, such as wrinkles and fine lines, can be significantly reduced with forehead, or brow, lift. The entire appearance of the face can be affected by furrows and frown lines that appear on the forehead, sometimes making people look much older than they actually are. A brow lift is designed to remove excess muscle and tissue that cause the brow to sag. With a small, discreet incision just above the hairline, Dr. Constance Barone can tighten the muscles of the forehead and smooth out the remaining skin. A brow lift is often combined with facelift and/or eyelid surgery to provide more complete facial rejuvenation.

Forehead (brow) lift is another cosmetic enhancement procedure that can be performed endoscopically, using a small camera and tiny instruments inserted through a few incisions, each less than an inch in length. This method is much less invasive than other techniques and typically requires less recovery time.

Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)

Otoplasty, or ear surgery, can correct a number of problems associated with the ears, including large or misshapen ears and ears that protrude too far from the head. The procedure is very common among patients between the ages of four and 14; however, adults may also be candidates for the procedure. Otoplasty can be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the individual's needs. One of the more common techniques used in ear surgery involves our plastic surgeon creating a small incision in the back of the ear. The cartilage is then sculpted and bent backward toward the head, and non-removable stitches can be placed to help maintain the new shape. Otoplasty typically takes about two to three hours, depending on the type of ear surgery being performed and the extent of the procedure. There will be a faint scar on the back of the ear; however, this is virtually undetectable and will typically fade with time. Ear surgery is an effective way of restoring balance among the ears, and can go a long way in enhancing appearance and boosting self-confidence.
