Rhinoplasty Recovery and Healing
A rhinoplasty can make a major difference to a person's appearance. With that in mind, the results are only optimal when patients closely follow instructions for recovery. Doing so will reduce the chances of complications or adverse side effects from occuring. It will also help ensure that the appearance of the nose is not negatively altered during the healing process.
You will receive detailed information about the entire healing process when you meet with a San Antonio plastic surgeon. Right now, we'd like to go over some of the basics to make sure patients heal properly and look their best down the road.
Before Rhinoplasty - Preparing for Surgery
The recovery process for a San Antonio rhinoplasty actually begins before the procedure is performed. The right preparation means optimal healing.
Patients should quit smoking and abstain from drinking alcoholic beverages at least a month before surgery. Both of these can affect healing time. It's also important that patients fill all prescriptions for antibiotics and/or pain relievers prior to the surgery date. This will mean that patient are ready for recovery ahead of time without needing to scramble once the surgery is performed. Patients should arrange for transportation to and from the surgery since they will not be in a fit state to operate a vehicle after the rhinoplasty procedure.
The Importance of Having a Loved One to Help You
It's important that patients arrange for a loved one to be with them for at least a day or two after the surgery has been performed. This will ensure that patients have company around the home to assist with various tasks during those early moments in the healing process. Having a loved one present may also be helpful in the chance of a complication arising--the loved one can contact us and assist the patient in coming to our practice in such instances.
The Day of Surgery - What to Do
On the day of the facial plastic surgery, patients should not wear any jewelry or make-up and should wear only loose-fitting, comfortable clothes. This will help ensure that patients are relaxed and at ease during the procedure.
The First Days After Rhinoplasty Surgery
The first day or so after surgery, pain and discomfort are normal. Swelling, bruising, and redness around the nose are common as well.
It's imperative that patients not touch their nose or blow their nose during this period since that will alter the shape. If patients wear glasses, they should consider switching to contacts. The nose is so tender during this period that even the pressure of glasses on the bridge can affect the results of surgery. Any strenuous physical activity or air travel should be avoided.
The First Week After Rhinoplasty Surgery
Within the first week of surgery, patients will visit their cosmetic plastic surgeon in San Antonio for a follow-up visit. This will be to ensure that healing is going as planned. Patients are urged to refrain from heavy lifting until they are advised otherwise by their surgeon. In addition, patients should continue to avoid blowing their nose for a few weeks since the nose will still be tender at this time.
What to Expect Going Forward in the Months Ahead
As the weeks and months go by, patients will be able to gradually return to normal activities. Your surgeon will ask that you proceed slowly, however, since injuring your nose after a rhinoplasty will require a secondary/corrective surgery. You will continue to visit the practice a few times for monitoring and follow-up care.
