What to Expect after Facelift
Facelift surgery is one of the most effective cosmetic procedures for reversing the signs of aging on the face. From creases and wrinkles to loose, sagging skin, facelift surgery can address the common effects of aging to give the face a tighter, smoother, and more youthful appearance. While these results are desirable for most of our patients, it is important for patients to carefully consider all aspects of facelift surgery before committing to treatment. At her plastic surgery practice, Dr. Constance M. Barone ensures that her San Antonio patients know what to expect from facelift recovery long before the cosmetic procedure actually takes place. This enables her patients to make an informed decision regarding treatment, as well as make appropriate arrangements for the recovery period.
Post-Surgical Care
Immediately after surgery, the face will be wrapped in substantial bandages and dressings. These bandages keep pressure on the face and absorb any draining fluid or blood. In some cases, a drain will also be placed within these bandages. These bandages and the drain should not require any care on the patient’s part, as they are typically removed the day after surgery and replaced with lighter bandages. Dr. Barone will provide specific instructions for caring for or replacing these bandages throughout recovery, as well as instructions on caring for the incision site (sutures typically remain in place for about a week after surgery). Some basic tips that should be adhered to after facelift surgery include:
- Manage pain with medication as prescribed by Dr. Barone
- Use ice or cold packs to ease discomfort and reduce swelling
- Avoid shampooing the hair for at least 24 hours after surgery
- Make-up and sunscreen should be avoided for at least two days after sutures are removed
- If the skin feels tight or dry after surgery, an unscented moisturizer may be used
- Avoid heavy lifting and vigorous activity for at least 3 three weeks following surgery
- Avoid consumption of alcohol and tobacco in the weeks following surgery
Side Effects
During the first few weeks after facelift surgery, patients will likely experience a number of side effects. While the extent of symptoms may vary from patient to patient, most will experience some degree of the following side effects:
- Bruising
- Swelling
- Numbness or tingling sensation
- Bleeding
- An itchy or tight feeling on the skin of the face and neck
These side effects are to be expected and are not a sign of concern. However, if these symptoms to do not resolve on their own within a few weeks after surgery, Dr. Barone should be notified.
QuickLift™
Many of Dr. Barone’s patients opt to undergo a QuickLift™ rather than a full facelift. The QuickLift™ produces results similar to those of a facelift (most patients erase up to 10 years from the appearance) but it is a less invasive procedure. As such, the QuickLift™ requires a shorter recovery time and results in less swelling, bruising, and other side effects. This is a good alternative for patients who are concerned about the recovery that results after facelift surgery.
