What Are the Side Effects of Liposuction?
Liposuction is one of the most frequently performed plastic surgery procedures. It is a popular procedure because it allows patients to remove pockets of fat that have failed to respond to healthy diet and exercise, a problem that is experienced by many. At Dr. Constance M. Barone’s plastic surgery practice she offers several liposuction techniques, all geared toward helping patients achieve a more pleasing body contour. While the surgical experience and recovery will vary slightly for each patient depending on the type of liposuction performed, the amount of fat removed, and the area of the body that has been treated, our San Antonio patients will likely experience the following liposuction side effects:
Swelling
Swelling is the most common side effect of liposuction. Patients will be given compression garments that should be worn throughout the healing process or according to Dr. Barone’s instructions. These garments should aid in reducing swelling. Other practices that can help reduce swelling include drinking plenty of fluids, avoiding salt intake, and gently massaging the treatment area to promote blood circulation. Swelling is a temporary side effect and should diminish significantly within two weeks following surgery. However, as some swelling may remain, it can take up to six months for patients to see the final results of liposuction.
Bruising
Bruising is another common side effect of liposuction. Visible bruising may appear in and around the treatment area for several days after treatment and the area is likely to feel tender to the touch. In addition to bruising, some patients may notice that the skin appears uneven in tone or red in color. These are temporary conditions that should fade within one to two weeks after the liposuction treatment.
Discomfort
The initial phase of recovery from liposuction can be uncomfortable. Especially in the first few days of recovery it is common for patients to feel mild pain, tenderness, or numbness around the treatment area. The incision areas may feel especially irritated. Pain medication can be prescribed by Dr. Barone to help patients manage discomfort until these symptoms dissipate.
Loose Skin
After liposuction, patients may notice that the skin appears loose and baggy. Some may even notice that the skin has a rippled appearance. This is especially common for patients who have had large amounts of fat removed or for older patients who lack good skin elasticity. The use of compression garments should help the skin retract and conform to the body. In most patients loose skin is a temporary condition and the skin will tighten up within a few months after liposuction treatment. If the skin fails to retract, Dr. Barone can discuss additional cosmetic procedures in order to remove and/or tighten excess skin in the treatment area.
