Breast Lift Surgery: What is the “Lollipop Technique”? By Constance M. Barone, M.D. on June 30, 2014

A woman in her undergarments lies down on a couchDr. Constance Barone knows how important it is to tailor surgeries to the needs of her patients. That's why so many people from the greater San Antonio area have come to her for advanced surgical procedures. Sometimes relatively minor surgeries can have major results. Such is the case with breast lift surgery, which improves the pertness and perkiness of sagging breasts.

There are numerous ways to perform a breast lift, and we'd like to take a moment right now to consider one particular incision method that has been dubbed “the lollipop technique”.

The Traditional Breast Lift Surgery Technique

When discussing the lollipop breast lift, it may be helpful to first consider traditional breast lift surgery and what that entails. During a traditional breast lift, three incisions are made:

  • One incision around the areola
  • One incision along the fold where the underside of the breast meets the chest
  • One vertical incision along the lower curve of the breast to connect these two

Through these three incisions, excess skin, fat, and glandular tissue is removed in order to improve overall breast contour and appearance.

How the Lollipop Incision Method Differs

The lollipop breast lift incision uses only two incisions to achieve its lifting results:

  • The circular incision around the areola
  • The vertical incision along the lower curve of the breast

Since it's just two incisions, it's been called the lollipop method given the shape.

Advantages of the Lollipop Breast Lift Technique

The lollipop breast lift involves fewer and less extensive incisions than a traditional breast lift, which means less scarring and a generally faster healing time. The less invasive a procedure, the better it is for patients overall.

Ideal Candidates for the Lollipop Breast Lift Technique

The best candidates for lollipop breast lift surgery are people who have breasts that droop or sag a fair amount due to weight loss or advanced age. They should be in good overall health and not suffer from any kinds of medical issues that would make surgery of any kind risky or problematic. In general, a lollipop breast lift is ideal when the drooping or sagging is not terribly considerable, which is why less invasive incisions are made than in a traditional breast lift.

Are there other breast lift incision methods out there?

Yes, there are, and these additional incision methods are less invasive than even the lollipop breast lift. One is known as the doughnut method, which involves an incision around the areola only, with no need for the vertical incision of the lollipop method. There is also a crescent breast lift that can be performed, in which the incision is made along just a portion of the areola.

In many cases, these other two less-invasive breast lift methods will involve the use of breast implants for a combined breast lift and augmentation procedure.
