The Side Effects of Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery
At the San Antonio practice of Dr. Constance Barone, countless patients have achieved a younger appearance thanks to facial plastic surgery. The wrinkle reduction and anti-aging benefits are plentiful whether patients undergo a facelift to address issues with the middle portion of the face or cosmetic eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) to rejuvenate the eyes.
We'd like to consider the side effects of cosmetic eyelid surgery right now since many patients have asked us what to expect from the healing and recovery process.
Side Effects Are Part of the Natural Healing Process
Patients should keep in mind that side effects are part of the natural healing process. These are simply your body's response to the surgery. Side effects are distinct from complications, which are medical problems that should be treated as soon as they arise in order to prevent further and more serious issues.
Soreness and Discomfort
Both soreness and discomfort are to be expected after undergoing any surgery, Patients may notice acute soreness around their eyes for the first few days, with the pain diminishing as the healing process continues. In order to reduce the discomfort, patients are advised to take pain relievers as directed.
Dry Eye and Eye Irritation
Since the eye area is operated on, the eyes themselves may feel dry, itchy, or irritated while healing. This is a normal part of the healing process, and patients must avoid rubbing their eyes until they are fully healed. To address dry eye, liquid tears may be used as needed. If the eyelids themselves feel dry, special ointment will be prescribed or provided in order to place onto the eyelids and soothe and moisturize the skin.
Bruising and Swelling Around the Eyes
After cosmetic eyelid surgery, the area around the eyes and eyelids may be bruised and puffy as a response to the surgery. This will be most pronounced in the first few days, with the swelling and bruising going down significantly by the end of the first week. Getting ample bed rest is ideal for optimal healing.
Blurry or Hazy Vision
In the first few days of healing, patients are bound to experience issues with the clarity of their vision. This is often due to a combination of the swelling of the eye area and the irritation of the eyes. Again, this will become reduced as healing continues. The best option is for patients to rest and avoid any activities that may strain their eyes early on.
Post-Surgical Scarring
Scarring is a given after any surgery, and there will be some scarring after cosmetic eyelid surgery. However, the placement of the incisions is such that scarring will be as subtle as possible. For upper eyelid surgery, the scar is small and hidden in the natural fold of the upper eyelid; for lower eyelid surgery, the scar will be hidden right below the lower eyelashes.
Follow Pre-Op and Post-Op Instructions Carefully
In order to reduce the severity and duration of these side effects, it's advised that patients follow all of their pre-op and post-op instructions to the letter. These are designed to ensure optimal healing conditions and reduce the chances of any adverse side effects occurring.
