The stomach is a common area of concern among Dr. Constance Barone’s male patients. While many men feel pressure to have a slim midsection with defined abdominal muscles, the reality for most men is a soft abdomen that has stretched skin and excess fat. It is very difficult to eliminate the appearance of a “gut” or “beer belly” through diet and exercise alone. Fortunately, a tummy tuck can help men get the results they desire. A tummy tuck eliminates excess fat and tissue, tightens the abdominal wall, and re-drapes the skin along the midsection to give patients a slimmer and more toned stomach. A male tummy tuck can help Dr. Barone’s San Antonio patients get the strong, masculine appearance they desire for their midsection.

Tummy Tuck Procedure

A tummy tuck procedure may be performed as either an inpatient or outpatient procedure. In either case, the patient will be properly anesthetized so they do not feel any pain throughout the procedure. In order to have adequate access to the stomach muscles and abdominal tissues, a long incision will be made across the midsection. This incision will be placed low on the abdomen (just above the pubic area) and will extend from one hip bone to the other. Once the incision is made, the skin is lifted away from the abdominal wall so that the muscles can be tightened. Any excess tissue will then be removed before re-draping the abdominal skin and closing the incision. These alterations will give the stomach a smoother, tighter, and firmer appearance.

Recovery

The alterations that are made during a male tummy tuck are significant, so patients should be prepared for a lengthy recovery. It often takes up to two weeks for patients to feel ready to return to work or other daily routines, and up to four weeks to feel as though they have completely recovered. During the initial weeks of recovery it is common for patients to experience side effects, which are likely to include the following:

These symptoms will subside as recovery progresses. A light exercise routine that includes frequent walking may help speed along recovery, but more strenuous activities (such as running or weightlifting) should be avoided for at least six weeks after surgery.

Additional Techniques

A traditional tummy tuck meets the cosmetic needs of many of our male patients, but there are other tummy tuck techniques offered by Dr. Barone. A mini tummy tuck uses a smaller incision and addresses only the lower abdomen. Dr. Barone also offers an extended tummy tuck, which uses a slightly longer incision to address the lower hips, where “love handles” often form.
