Which Breast Implant is Right for You? We Offer Several Options to Meet Each Unique Need
We offer four types of breast implants at our San Antonio practice: saline, silicone gel, MemoryGel BOOST, and gummy bear implants. Each type has unique characteristics that can benefit you, depending on your unique cosmetic goals:
Saline implants are made of a silicone shell filled with a saltwater solution (saline). Since they are filled post-operatively, saline breast implants provide more incision options. One is the TUBA technique, which places implants via an incision in the belly button for virtually no visible scarring.
Silicone implants consist of a silicone shell that is pre-filled with silicone gel rather than saline. The silicone gel imitates the feel of fat, giving the implants a natural look and feel. However, Dr. Barone is experienced at making both saline and silicone implants look completely natural.
MemoryGel BOOST implants are cohesive gel implants developed by MENTOR®. Made in the USA, MemoryGel BOOST implants provide a natural feel as well as greater stability when it comes to breast shape. This results in breasts that look and move more like natural breast tissue.
Gummy bear breast implants are silicone implants filled with cohesive gel with a texture similar to that of the candy these implants are named after. Gummy bear implants have a teardrop shape, giving them an incredibly natural-looking appearance.

Many patients are concerned about the scars they may have after breast augmentation. Our plastic surgeon takes measures to ensure your scars are easily hidden. She can use one of several incision types to help create the most natural-looking results:
- Periareolar: An incision made around the areola.
- Transaxillary: An incision made in the armpit.
- TUBA: An incision made in the navel. This incision is only available with saline implants.

Typically, a full recovery takes around four to six weeks. However, your recovery will depend on multiple factors like your incision type, implant placement, and your ability to heal. Awake Breast Augmentation vs. General Anesthesia
A major distinguishing factor in the way that Dr. Barone performs breast surgery is her approach to anesthesia and sedation. Breast augmentation is typically performed under general anesthesia, which essentially means the patient sleeps throughout the procedure. But whenever possible, Dr. Barone prefers to only use local anesthetic to numb the area. This approach is called "awake surgery" and it offers a number of benefits while still ensuring your comfort:
- No "hangover," a typical side effect of general anesthesia
- Less disorientation after surgery
- Minimal nausea, if any
- Can return to normal activities more quickly
